Moon Experiment

I have a great view of the moon from my studio and stand on the deck and appreciate it's beauty from new moon to full moon. I have made lunar wall pieces with wood and acrylic paint but not from clay. I have really wanted to create some stoneware lunar pieces and started experimenting with some design ideas last week.

I wedged and rolled the clay to the desired thickness, then draped the clay over a large mold to provide support to the clay until it was firm enough to maintain it's shape. I pressed in general shapes of what will become the cratered areas on the moons surface and will hand carve more details before bisque firing. Assuming this piece makes it through bisque firing, my intentions are to use a lava glaze over a base color. I want this to be a piece that is visually and texturally satisfying. I look forward to sharing updates on this piece and cross my fingers they always positive.
